A guy you’d want on your flank in a fight

Steve and I were roommates our Senior year at Notre Dame, sharing an off-campus apartment with two other guys. Steve and I were unmatched socks in many regards — Steve short and compact, me tall and rangy. Steve an engineer, me a history major. What we had in common was that we were both going to be Marine officers ...but even there we traveled different paths — Steve earning his wings of gold as a Naval Aviator, serving less then a decade (although I think if the Corps had kept the OV-10 it might of been longer) and me going into the infantry and serving almost 30 years. I think our paths may have only crossed once or twice since ND but I remember him as a great guy, a solid pal, and a guy you would want on your flank in a fight. I am amused to see references to his prowess as a cook on these pages, because both us sure ate a lot of soup and sandwiches (the limit of our culinary skills) our Senior year.. RIP Marine - I know you’ve joined the guard mount on Heaven’s scenes. Semper Fidelis, ~Colonel Jerry Lynes, USMC (Ret)//ND 1980
